(Government Bill 94—1)
From: Ukes Baha | 13 January 2025
I oppose the Principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Bill on the grounds that it is unnecessary, lacks legitimacy, risks undermining decades of progress, and threatens to divide rather than unite New Zealanders. Below, I outline the key reasons for my opposition and offer constructive recommendations for a better path forward.
This bill is not an act of progress but a regressive step that undermines the Treaty’s spirit, disregards Māori partnership, and threatens social cohesion. I urge the Justice Committee to reject this proposal and instead focus on measures that genuinely honour the Treaty’s intent and improve outcomes for all New Zealanders.
